Mallus

There is a joke in Malayalam which says if you go to the moon, there will be a few malayalis and a 'chayakada'. What made me reminded of this now? Well, its an incident that happened yesterday.

As most of you knows twenty20 world cup is going on and there was an India-Pakistan match y'day. There are many Pakistanis and few Indians here in my campus. So Pakistan student union decided to show the match live on a big screen. I also went there to watch the match which was shown in a big lecture hall. Most of the people there were Pakistanis and there were a few Indians as expected. I never though there will be a Malayali.

In between the match somebody goes to the door and says loudly: "Da.....M***...njan vilichal ninakku varan pattilla alle'. There was a loud reply from my back, obviously in Malayalam.

Sanjay Datt and the media

I read an article in rediff by T. V. R. Shenoy about the court verdict in Sanjay Datt case. I completely agree with what he says-nobody is above the law and media is giving more hype to the news than what it deserves. I have a feeling that at least some of them are trying to make an empathy among people for Sanjay Datt. Of course I am not against him, but if he has done something wrong he has to face the consequences. What I have read is mostly from the net-home pages of many news papers/channels. I didn't watch any news channels as they are not available here :( But I can imagine how channels like NDTV would have treated the news.

There are lot more things to discuss-like the recent incidents in Andhra, the details about Indo-US nuclear deal, soaring prices of petrol etc. It is interesting that these are only an inner-page stories or 1-2 column stories in many of the papers. I will be more interested to read about issues like these, which I believe is more important to common people like me, than knowing what Sanjay Datt got for his breakfast in his first day in prison or if he will get a mosquito repellent or not. It is pathetic that the media's focus is not on the real issues of people. Of course media/press is not the only one to be blamed. After all they give what people want. I can imagine what people will be more interested in if they have news about both Indo-US nuclear deal and Sanjay's case in the same paper !! So who is to be blamed ?? Well, everybody has to think about it.
